In the work «John» the artistic distortions of Voligamsi have a very rare, unusual for his work direction, although the work itself refers to a period when the painter’s style is formed conclusively and acquires recognizable features - in the early 2000-Voligamsi develops a special retro-photo-realistic technique, which is then supplemented by surrealist images.
Traditional for the artist male character here is neither a soldier nor a «white collar». It’s a young man, perhaps a member of the aristocracy or the intelligentsia. The position of the profile refers not to photography, but to the parade European portrait of the Renaissance. Exaggeration of the chin, on the one hand, works on the sensation of unreality and detachment of the image, and on the other, refers either to the ancient Greek profile with a characteristic heavy bottom, or to the «Habsburg jaw», the patrimony of the famous European royal dynasty. The aristocratic thus becomes as much a target for Voligamsi as everything connected with power and war - the object of a mysterious, distorted memory, the exposure of external, surface well-being and inner experience.
