Valeriy Chkalov (1904 - 1938) was a Soviet test pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union. The commander of the crew of the plane, which made the first non-stop flight across the North Pole from Moscow to America in 1937. The portrait is based on a photograph of a pilot from the 1930s.
